Extended Family has conceded, but only ever so slightly, for our friends Dave Villegas (Dave Nada) and Matt Nordstrom - together they are Nadastrom and they currently vibe out of sunny LA California, which at first look may seem as if we are diverting from the community of the capital. Upon closer observation, however, it is easy to see the many ways that Nadastrom holds this city deeply etched into their identity.
Jesse Tittsworth (U Street Music Hall, T&A Records) suggested to the two that they may hit it off based on their music tastes around ten years ago - and he was right. They went on to host a weekly Wednesday bar night in Adams Morgan, where Nadastrom was initially conceived and explored. Together they got lost in the warbling stretchy fabric of J Dilla and the clunky beating of Solid Groove Records.. but the true plight of any DJ with a voice remains in the battle with the hesitant bar or club owner, living without vision or taste, complacent with the safety net of the Top 40 sound and crowd, and it was in a similar scene that Nadastrom walked away from their first party after only a few short months.
Nadastrom has moved universes away from this sort of hapless finger wagging, and is now perhaps best known for pioneering an entirely new sound and genre (something that would have been impossible to do under the previous circumstances). Moombahton fuses reggaeton and house music together and warps the styles down to a chugging 108 BPM. It hints at bachata and dancehall using updated, electronic sounds and has sparked the way for other producers to play and lend their own twist.
This is the first installment of Extended Family curated by a team, a pair of people who have been comfortable with their chemistry for nearly a decade, and there are undeniable benefits of collaboration. Villegas grew up on a perpetual soundtrack of cumbia, ecuadorian folk, and spanish ballads from his parents. Both Villegas and Nordstrom grew up listening to punk, hip-hop and metal. They combine their influences, becoming ever more eclectic, more faceted. While Dave seems enthusiastic about the budding music scenes in LA and DC (he considers himself a big fan of DC record labels like Future Times, 1432 R, and Sol Power - as well as LA staples such as Dam Funk, Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, Delroy Edwards, and the Innovative Leisure imprint), Matt mentions his interest in disco, psychedelic rock, and jazz. The delightful possibility of these permutations can surely help a listener expect more than just Moombahton from these selectors. Perhaps rather than being an indicator of one sound defining their identity, the invention of Moombahton may only suggest how much more these two have to offer.
Dave and Matt look forward to their upcoming release coming out on Sol Selectas (NYC) this month called Jupiter b/w Chivas, and Matt looks forward to taking his wife on vacation.
Enjoy the mix, happy new year!
